Office Talk: Trailblazing vs. Time Tested - E22
I am realizing the difference between being a startup/trailblazer vs the old reliable time tested product on the block. Myopia management is worthwhile, backed by science, and in 10 years will become the standard of care. The problem is that its path has not been cleared out, it has thorns and pricker bushes everywhere, and the terrain is far from smooth. In addition, you are working with kids and parents are not always keen on some kind of therapy that they have never heard of.
On the other hand, specialties such as glaucoma and scleral lenses are well established, insurances recognize them and reimburse you for your time, and patients expect the treatment you prescribe. Obviously, the journey on this path is much smoother and accepted. I am not saying that one is more worthwhile than the other, but I am saying depending on your commitment level, you should choose your path wisely!
