Office Talk: Good Problems - E29
Today I am going to focus on the good problem of growth. Believe me, we all want this problem, but still have to make sure we work hard to make growing pains minimal and keep doing the things that got you to this point.
The first thing I would say is that at a certain point (600-750k gross) you will want to slowly start setting up the infrastructure of specialization within the office. DO not get me wrong, you need to cross train to an extent, but if everyone can do everything, you will find that nobody does anything.
This will make for a better patient experience, but also for a better staff experience. They want to know what they are being held responsible for and what they should focus their time and energy on. Making sure you define the seat on the bus is crucial and the next step is putting the right people in the said seats. DO not be afraid to experiment and make changes early on.
Lastly, make sure to hire for the office you want to be, not the office you have. Early on I would try everything I could to not add staff, and inevitably I would just hire a new person and everyone's life would get better. I am not saying to be frivolous and have inefficient staff, but I believe most staff members will start to burn out if they are asked to work at 85% or more capacity for too long.
Make your life and your staff's lives better and be ready to take on the challenge of growth. I will let you know how my changes play out. Tune in next week for more of the details!
