The cold start! It is such a joy to go back down memory lane and remember where it all began. If you are about to do it, in the middle of it, or finally out of the startup phase, you will understand what I am about to say: a cold start doctor jumps off a cliff and learns to fly on the way down. Think about all the hats you have to wear, you are dispensing, adjusting frames, answering phones, seeing patients, human resources, payroll, etc. It never ends and it is not what you thought you were going to be doing when you were in optometry school is it? Well let me give you hope, where you are now is NOT where you will be in 5 years. You are going to grow, expand and will need to focus your time, effort, and energy on patient care and growing your office, not merely surviving to be open another day...I promise.
Why do I bring this up you ask? Well, because after year 2 or 3 you need to start planning and operating your office like its the 750k-950k office it is going to be. That means having talented people around you, protocol and procedures in place so you are not still answering phones and dispensing frames to patients. Your time needs to be spent on seeing patients, growing the office, and planning for the future. The quicker you implement this type of mentality, the faster you will be the office you dream of.
