Ok, I want you to close your eyes and imagine your brand new office. What does it look like when you walk in the front door? How many frames do you have in your optical and how are the frames organized? Where is the waiting room and how are your patients checked in? What is your staff wearing and who will be doing the workups? What in fact does a workup entail at your office? After your state of the art exam, how does optical begin and what lens options will your optician be offering?
Do you have answers to all those questions? If you do not know, you better figure it out before you open because your staff and patients expect you to! I am not trying to scare you and I know you will be relatively slow at first which will give you ample time to figure all of the above (and much much more). The point is when you make your first hires, you have to instill a sense of confidence in your employees and subsequently your patients. Make sure to have answers and set the tone from the start. The last thing you need is an employee getting cold feet or questioning your leadership early on. Trust me, I have lived this and you are going to adapt and change, but that will take care of itself. The tone you set from the start, that needs to be filled with absolute poise and confidence in your vision.
