Closing Thought of the Week: Tale of the Starfish - E26
Now you may have heard this before or some other variant, but follow me on this. The tale begins with an old man sitting on the beach of his oceanfront beach house. He was taking in the full moon and warm summer air when he looked a few houses down to see a man walking on the beach. Now people taking summer night walks is nothing new, yet this seemed different.
The walker would bend down every few steps and throw something in the water. He did this for quite some time and passed the old man's house, where he could see that the walker was picking up starfish that had been washed onto shore and throwing them back in. What a crazy guy, thought the old man, and he went inside.
The next night, the old man sitting on his porch, saw the same guy walking and doing the same thing. This time he was going to get to the bottom of it and he went and confronted the young walker. What are you doing, he asked. You know you are not going to save all these starfish. The walker smiled, looked at the old man, bent down and picked up a starfish. I know I will not save everyone, but this one right here, it matters to this one, and he chucked it back into the ocean.
There you have it my friends, all the wisdom you need. We cannot be everything to every patient. We do however, have the opportunity to be everything we can to the current patient in the chair. Do not forget that every tree in the forest has its purpose. Take care of each one and watch your practice and proverbial forest grow and grow!
