This Week's Closing Thought: An Overnight Success in Optometry is 10 Years

As I look back on the past 9 years, from graduation, opening and office, to starting my own myopia management niche, I am reminded of the wise words of the Optometry Godfather, Marty Carroll (Cheyenne Vision Clinic, Cheyenne, WY...this dude does it all and lives for Optometry. If you ever have a chance to study under him or pick his brain, DO IT! I implore you. Everyday, I try to be a poor man's Marty), “an overnight success in Optometry is 10 years.” Now if you buy a practice you already have established bloodlines but, for any cold start, this is the unfortunate truth. You have to put in the time and not grow weary. I hate being told time and experience will come because I want it now. I guess the motivation to beat the “timeline” drives me to an extent and I am always pushing the limits, but from my experience, his words are oh so true. That being the case, keep grinding, but maybe take a step back and make sure you enjoy this amazing ride.
